FAQ
Q.) Which extruders are compatible with the METHOD XL?
A.) The 1C, 1XA, 2A, 2XA, and LABS extruders are compatible with METHOD XL.
Q.) Which METHOD materials are compatible with METHOD XL?
A.) ABS-R and ABS-CF are compatible model materials, with RapidRinse for support materials. You can find more information about compatible materials here Additional materials can be accessed with the LABS Extruder.
Q.) Why are there less materials compatible on the METHOD XL compared to METHOD X?
A.) Compatible materials are carefully tuned by the UltiMaker engineering team for the METHOD XL. As more materials are developed and tuned, the material offering will expand.
Q.) Can I print 3rd party materials on the METHOD XL machine?
A.) Yes, 3rd party materials can be printed using the LABS extruder.
Q.) Can I print other UltiMaker METHOD materials on the METHOD XL machine?
A.) Non-compatible legacy METHOD materials can be printed on the METHOD XL machine using the LABS experimental extruder. Please note that these materials have not been tuned for METHOD XL and may need some settings adjustments. That is why these materials are only supported as experimental with the LABS extruder.
Q.) Why is the max chamber temperature on METHOD XL less than METHOD X?
A.) The design of the METHOD XL chamber allows for lower max temperatures being required for materials. Additionally, a heated build plate has been added to increase the level of control over the printing environment.
Q.) Why do the materials print at a different chamber temperature on METHOD XL than the METHOD X?
A.) METHOD XL's chamber has been designed to be more efficient and even heating inside the chamber, resulting in a lower max temperature needing to be used for materials.
Q.) Are the Clean Air and Base Station METHOD accessories compatible with METHOD XL?
A.) No, the Clean Air and Base Station products are not compatible with METHOD XL due to its larger size. The METHOD XL also has a built-in HEPA filters.
Q.) My spool has flat edges and will not roll in the material case. What can I do?
A.) Please contact UltiMaker Support for an adapter part that can be added to your spools for use with the material case.
Q.) How can I get more desiccant for the material case?
A.) More desiccant for the material case can be obtained by either using new desiccant from another METHOD spool bag or by ordering a Material Dry Kit for METHOD and using the desiccant that ships with that product. Please note that the Dry Materials firmware feature on METHOD XL is not available at this time.
Q.) Is the Material Case sold separately?
A.) No, the Material Case is only included with the METHOD XL.
Q.) If I am printing with single extrusion (not using the support extruder), will my build volume increase on METHOD XL?
A.) Yes, your build volume will increase due to not having to change extruders. This will be reflected in CloudPrint when you slice for single extrusion printing.
Q.) Why are some machine UI features (i.e. Dry Material, Annealing, and Preheat) available on METHOD and METHOD X, but not on METHOD XL?
A.) METHOD XL has a different machine design than METHOD and METHOD X, so these features must be tuned specifically for METHOD XL. As the tuning processes are completed and made available, future firmware releases will enable these tuned features.
Q.) Do I need to print with a Raft?
A.) All method products need to print with a raft to ensure the success of the print. Deviating from this will likely lead to print quality issues and possible print failure. It is strongly recommended to use the default profile settings.
Q.) Can I other brands of materials on the Method XL?
A.) Using a MakerBot Labs Extruder for Method you're able to print using other brands of materials or Labs certified materials. Please note the extruder and materials are experimental and the warranty varies per region. For more information on warranty please see this link. Customer support does not provide support for experimental products. For more information about this please see this link.
